Eish, and there we were really hoping it would not be necessary to
come out of hiding to comment on these recent attacks.
Sandy Bay has become a complete 'no-go' area in our opinion. If you
are going to venture over that way be very, very prepared. Dont take
pepper spray along, our criminals sniff the stuff for fun. Take a

A cyclist riding on the mountain this morning (sat 11 July) - making
his way up Plum Pudding Hill from the Cape Town side - was accosted by
2 black men with knives. They wanted his cellphone and money - weren't
interested in the bike. They only took his phone and in parting
slashed the back tyre of his bike.

 Hi Everyone

We heard tonight that the two Kalk Bay Amphitheatre muggers - with
evidence on them - have been arrested. The arrest was affected by the
TMNP Security Team. Both criminals were positively identified by
victims.

Awesome news indeed. Congratulations to Hilton and his team.

Best Regards

 Morning Andre

Good to hear you still fighting in trenches.
Thought I'd take a walk up to the beginning of India Venster trail to check the signage before commenting.
There are two signs at the beginning of the track that clearly state that the trail is dangerous and is only for experienced hikers and that the recommended route is Platteklip gorge. Now, while it is extremely sad what happened to the gentleman that was killed, I think it extremely irresponsible for anyone to ignore the signs and take an eleven year old kid with them.

Here are the highlights from everyone's responses so far. Good to see the
ideas and the possible solutions.

It might be good to get some of this to the relevant WSAR / TMNP people.
I'll leave that to whoever wants to forward the information. There are some
good ideas here and it would be a shame to waste them as such.

 Thanks Anwaaz

I agree with you that this issue is more complex than purely signage and
it's great to know that you/WSAR are in discussion with TMNP regarding
the accident hotspots.

I agree with Urs that it doesn't help to bash TMNP as frustrating as
relations with them may be.

 Hi All.

I certainly agree that signage must be improved... this will not stop the mayhem..

The issue I have is people dont adhere to any signs and dont interpret maps correctly.. Even if told a route is unsafe by Hikers they still dont listen.

Ladders, chains , foot and hand holds will certainly encourage access in a route that is exposed in certain areas. More people will access leavin more problems

 Hi Andre,

Your comments are absolutely right. The signage is indeed very poor, but even worse there is no signs on the top indicating that this is a dangerous route going down.
It would indeed help a lot if the signs were improved with the danger clearly stated, but even this can't prevent stupid people from going up this route. I have personally seen people taking up dog's on the India Venster route!
